I was trained in the classics. I find that I have recently put together my own method based on the teachings of a lot of different people. An actor must have an awareness of the form of acting and the soul of artistry.
I have so much respect for him. He really just does what his heart is telling him to do. He was amazing to work with and really just a brilliant guy.
If somebody offered me the money I would probably make one but would I actually seek it out? I don`t know. I don`t really live my life like that.
I`d been living in the tunnel for about three months before the idea came up about making the film and really became good friends with the people.
I`ll give you an example. Henry, the old black guy who cooks the corn bread, he worked on the railroads for about 20 years so he knows how to lay and build track.
We didn`t have a drill so he would burn the holes through the wood with a metal rod that he heated up in a fire. Can you imagine an ordinary crew doing that?
After a while you `d start to see who was good at that job and they treated it like it was the most important thing to them in the world.
Other people were fantastic at tapping into electricity. We`d be in a place with no electricity and they would make electricity happen.
What being a crew and what this film did was give people a sense of future. It gave them a goal to work towards, which was really special.
I never wanted to be a film director but after this experience I really loved it. I would love to do more documentaries but it`s difficult to find backing for them.
